Pema started school in 2021 and has made many new friends who she loves to play with. Pema enjoys singing and studying Tibetan at school. She is very good at performing traditional Tibetan dances and also enjoys playing basketball and football.

World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s global day of action for children, by children, marking the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Child rights are human rights. They are non-negotiable and universal. But in too many places today children’s rights are being misunderstood, disregarded or even denied and attacked.

We are delighted to be able to update you on a small but important project we have recently funded. Having learnt that 12 households at the Poanta settlement in India lacked access to the main drainage system we send a grant out to assist in fixing the issue. This will improve the health and sanitation for the 12 households helping prevent diseases and improve living conditions. This will in turn help the wide community there.

Today we celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child which focuses attention on the the challenges girls like Tenzin face and promotes their empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

This year, the International Day of the Girl theme is Girls’ Vision for the Future.

Tenzin is in education in India and boards at school where her favourite subject is English and she also loves to take part in drama classes. Tenzin’s father works in health care in Nepal and her mother is a housewife yet her parents, like many others, struggle to afford the cost of quality education for their daughter.

Today is #FlagsForTibet day, celebrating Tibet and its culture and demonstrating support for the Tibetan people.

In 2020 China’s communist government reportedly ordered that prayer flags be taken down from roofs and hilltops in Tibet. Prayer flags are an iconic part of the Tibetan landscape and culture.

On the back of this news International Campaign for Tibet launched a day called Flags for Tibet, an annual day on September 25th.

Since 2021 Tibet Relief Fund has supported Shatsa, a grassroots organization in the remote northern region of Ladakh, India. In this rural area it is hard for families to access reading materials in Tibetan. Children need a wide variety of books available from an early age to be confident readers. Shatsa aims to get Tibetan children in Ladakh into the habit of reading a wide variety of materials, strengthening their academic progress and at the same time preserving the Tibetan language.

We are delighted to announce that Tibet Relief Fun

We are delighted to announce that Tibet Relief Fund has partnered with Volunteer Corp Nepal in a wonderful project to enable sustainable living for remote Tibetan communities. The “Sustainable Livelihood Project in the Himalaya – 2024” focuses on Tibetan families addressing their socio-economic challenges while preserving cultural values and traditions.

It aims to empower these families by expanding livelihood opportunities in a way that promotes environmental sustainability and respects their cultural heritage amidst economic constraints and environmental degradation concerns.

Volunteer Corp Nepal have completed the first phase of the project providing nutritional support to 82 households consisting of Tibetan refugees and local communities. The second phase is currently underway and VCN is finalising the participants for the trainings.

Earlier this year (2024) Thupten, our Projects Manager, went over to Nepal to meet the people involved and the communities involved.

Since 2020 we have partnered with Manjushri Educat

Since 2020 we have partnered with Manjushri Educational Services @manjushrieducation to produce five Tibetan language baby board books, open a children’s library in Dharamsala and support other initiatives they do. This amazing project supports Tibetan children with their early literacy development and helps keep the Tibetan language alive.

During 2023 Manjushri Educational Services Children’s Library, attracted over 2,600 visitors and 239 active members who borrowed 3,147 books annually.

Through the early literacy development program, sets of Early Childhood Care & Education Activity Booklets were produced and distributed to 6,872 children in schools and creches in India and Nepal, with proceeds supporting future programs.

Key programs include storytelling, art activities, and workshops in collaboration with ANEC and Tibetan Children’s Village Day School.

They also run special initiatives like Summer and Winter Reading Programs, reading hikes, and genre games foster interactive learning.
