Tibet Earthquake 2025

On 7th January, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the southern region of Tibet in Dingri Country, killing at least 126 people and injuring 338.

More than 46,500 people were affected across 27 villages throughout the region and media reports state the earthquake damaged and destroyed over 3,600 houses. An estimated 47,000 people are displaced and have been resettled in tents and prefab houses in a high-altitude environment, where temperatures in winter drop to -15 degrees Celsius at night.

Aftershocks continue to shake the region.

Amid this staggering need, and despite severe access challenges, we are actively working to identify meaningful ways to extend support to those directly affected by this disaster. Tibet Relief Fund aims to support the Tibetan community as we have done for the last 65 years and at the time of publishing we have raised around £10,000 to support the victims to the extent that it is possible.

Over the years, we have worked with grassroots partner organisations and trusted individuals to support Tibetan culture and traditions, both inside and outside Tibet. But today, delivering aid across the border is difficult. If we are unable to direct aid to victims inside Tibet, we will apply money raised to support Tibetan culture, livelihoods and traditions, as we have always done.

This is Tibet’s most serious disaster in years.
