Sustainable livelihood for Tibetans in Nepal

We are delighted to announce that Tibet Relief Fund has partnered with Volunteer Corp Nepal in a wonderful project to enable sustainable living for remote Tibetan communities. The “Sustainable Livelihood Project in the Himalaya – 2024” focuses on Tibetan families addressing their socio-economic challenges while preserving cultural values and traditions.

It aims to empower these families by expanding livelihood opportunities in a way that promotes environmental sustainability and respects their cultural heritage amidst economic constraints and environmental degradation concerns.

Volunteer Corp Nepal have completed the first phase of the project providing nutritional support to 82 households consisting of Tibetan refugees and local communities. The second phase is currently underway and VCN is finalising the participants for the trainings.

Earlier this year (2024) Thupten, our Projects Manager, went over to Nepal to meet the people involved and the communities involved. He had this sto say:

“The field visit surveyed participants for phase two of the program: vocational training in agricultural techniques. Tibetan and local communities will receive training and equipment for growing commercial crops.

“Additionally, we identified around 300 nuns at the nearby Tibetan monastery with health issues related to diet. The project will involve building two hi-tech greenhouses for year-round vegetable supply, while locals will learn modern farming techniques and receive support with accessing the market.”

Here are some photos from his visit.

Many thanks to Sustainable Future Foundation for providing a substantial grant toward this fantastic project.
