Empowering Tibetan Youth through the EVP Fellowship Programme

The Empowering the Vision Project (EVP) Fellowship Programme supports young Tibetans and adults in pursuing vocational training, internships and skill development opportunities that help them move toward self-reliance and meaningful employment. Many fellows come from financially constrained backgrounds and the fellowship enables them to focus on learning without the burden of economic hardship.

Since its inception in 2007, EVP has been providing fellowships each year to around ten deserving youth. However, selection is based strictly on merit, need, and commitment, ensuring that only genuinely dedicated and eligible candidates are supported. This approach maintains the quality and impact of the programme while offering meaningful assistance to those who truly benefit from it.

Nyima W. – Starting her career with EVP

Nyima W. completed her Secretary Course in Selakui. After her training, she began a five-month internship as a Secretary at the Tibetan Women’s Association, Dharamshala.

Living far from her workplace and without accommodation support, Nyima faced financial strain during her internship. The EVP Fellowship helped ease her challenges, enabling her to continue contributing meaningfully to her work and community.

Today, Nyima is a preschool teacher at Government High School, Chumanthang in Ladakh, continuing her journey of service and empowerment. Her story demonstrates how timely support can open doors to lasting career opportunities.

Ngawang D. – From Soldier to Baker

As a former army personnel, Ngawang had to leave his military service due to health reasons and soon found himself struggling financially. With limited savings and family responsibilities, he was unable to afford further training and had missed opportunities for scholarships.

However, through the support of the EVP Fellowship, Ngawang enrolled in a 20-month Bakery and Confectionery Course at Tibetan Private ITI, Selakui, in September 2024. The fellowship covered the full course costs, allowing him to focus fully on his training.

Having successfully completed his course, Ngawang has now successfully started an internship at Hilton and Hilton Garden Inn in Bengaluru. His journey reflects how the EVP Fellowship creates opportunities for Tibetan adults to gain professional skills, pursue meaningful careers and move toward self-reliance.
